This is one of the great films of the italian neo-realism that flourished after WW II. Some of the most important filmmakers of our time originated there, among them Vittorio de Sica (who directed this film), Cesare Zavattini (who co-wrote the story), Antonioni, Visconti, Rosellini and of course Fellini.
Any film by the above mentioned directors is on my must-watch list!
