IRB Approval needed?

In reviewing the UFL IRB website, I ran across the following information about the need for IRB approval for class projects: http://irb.ufl.edu/irb02/students.html. So, am I correct in thinking that we only need IRB approval if we plan to publish our results?

Thanks!

By the way, if you are going to apply for IRB approval, the deadline for the receipt of protocol to be considered on Feb 21 is Feb 4.

More on IRB ...

Studies can be expediated (don't require board review and therefore do not need to meet a deadline) if it is:

Research on individual or group behavior or characteristics of individuals, such as studies of perception, cognition, game theory, or test development where the Principal Investigator does not manipulate participants’ behavior and the research will not involve stress to participants research on drugs or devices for which an investigational new drug exemption or an investigational device exemption is not required.

As long as subjects used in the study are from within your own class and you do not plan to use this for any publication IRB can be skipped.

I would suggest getting IRB approval regardless of your intent to publish now. For the majority of students in this course are grad students, publishing will most likely be a regular occurrence in your life. In the future you may desire to use the data you collect, and getting IRB approval now will help you in that process.

Just my two cents :)
