'Girl Meets World': An Automatic Marketing Winner

I was very cautious going into my first episode of 'Girl Meets World,' Disney's new (as of 2014) spin-off of the popular 90s ABC sitcom 'Boy Meets World.' I, probably like you, followed the life and love story of Cory Matthews and his girlfriend (later wife) Topanga, and fell deeply in love with best friend-sidekick Shaun Hunter.

'Girl Meets World' takes place more than a decade later. Cory and Topanga's daughter, Riley, is trying to navigate her tween years -- and problems that go with them -- especially in regard to bonds with family and friends. At John Quincy Adams Middle School in Manhattan, Riley finds being a student more difficult because her dad is a history teacher there, and she's in his class. Her mom, a lawyer, is involved in her social life and owns a trendy teen hangout. Among Riley's classmates are best friend Maya (who reminds us oh so much of Cory's childhood bestie Shaun), crush Lucas, and quirky Farkle (son of Cory and Topanga's classmate Stuart Minkus).

You can see why I was nervous. 'Girl Meets World' had (and still has) some big shoes to fill, with its predecessor having a seven season run. But I had to watch it. I mean, they got Ben Savage and Danielle Fischer to reprise their roles as Cory and Topanga. So I watched the pilot. Then I watched the next one. Then I binged the entire season.

Whether you're a fan of 'Boy Meets World' or not, 'Girl Meets World' is important and I'll tell you why. I haven't watched a show on Disney Channel by choice in years, but I had to watch this one. 'Boy Meets World' ran from 1993-2000 and a lot of their fans are now parents. As a generation of new parents watch characters they watched as teens become parents themselves, Disney is perfectly targeting adults and teens with this new show.

Not to mention, we're all guilty of claiming the children's programming back in our day was way better than the crap they make nowadays. Well now the youth of America is experiencing the brilliance of Mr. Feeny and his lessons. Only this time it's Cory giving the lesson, not Feeny. Just imagine how satifying that must be for those parents. 'Boy Meets World' was a genius franchise to build on. You can watch season 1 of 'Girl Meets World' on Netflix.

Full House Is COMING BACK?!?!

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, John Stamos confirmed the rumors that have been swirling around Hollywood for a while now: FULL HOUSE IS RETURNING. Calling all 90's kids, this is a dream come true. Uncle Jesse will be producing the 13 episode new comedy that Netflix has just picked up, and the series will be starting with an hour long premiere!!

The new series will be called Fuller House and will focus on the lives of DJ, Stephanie and Kimmy Gibbler, with Uncle Jesse appearing for a few guest spots. Netflix has been talking to other stars of the show, to see if they would be interested in being guest stars as well. I sure hope so, because I can't imagine the house with Danny, Uncle Joey, or Michelle. I am hoping that this new show, premiering in 2016, will be able to keep up the same hype that it received back in the 80s and 90s. Full House was a largely loved show, and I do not want this new series to disappoint. Sometimes, spinoff shows are not the best, such as Girl Meets World, spinoff of one of my favorite shows, Boy Meets World. However, I believe that since Netflix picked it up instead of Nickelodeon, or the Disney Channel, the show has so much more potential. I will definitely be tuning in and can't wait to see one of my favorite families take the screen together again.

Boy Meets World: Girl Meets World

The very well-known 90's show, Boy Meets World, revolved around a boy Corey Matthews growing up and facing problems with friends, family, school. And of course, his romantic relationship with his childhood friend Topanga played a large role in the series. Nothing could permanently come between the two. In my opinion, their relationship was one of the biggest contributors to the show’s success. I think their onscreen chemistry will also aid in making the new series Girl Meets World a success.

If you haven’t heard, Ben Savage (Cory) and Danielle Fishel (Topanga) will reappear their Boy Meets World roles in Girl Meets World. The series will be based on the grown-up childhood sweethearts raising their 12-year-old daughter, Riley and is scheduled to premiere next year.

As silly as it sounds, Corey and Topanga were my relationship models growing up. In a way it was good and in a way it wasn't  They were good role models because their relationship was always respectful. It showed children and teens how to respect one another in a romantic relationship. However, It gave children and teens the notion that you can find your soul mate in Elementary School which is possible but very unlikely.

My only concern with the spin-off Girl Meets World is the romantic aspect. I hope that Corey and Topanga’s daughter does not also meet her “soul mate” in elementary school, middle school, or high school because that will continue to give to kids and teens the idea that their current boyfriend or girlfriend is their soul mate when in reality he or she is probably not.

I think that this show will either be a huge success or get cancelled after the first season. However, I have high hopes that it will be a success!

Boy Meets World

These past two weeks have been a little crazy for me. I've been in and out of the hospital and had other various sicknesses. However, the one thing that I've been using to entertain myself through sleepy recoveries has been the television show Boy Meets World. The show started airing when I was born, however I remember growing up on the re-runs.

When I was about six-years-old, my best friend at the time was a kid I had gone to pre-school with and who had been in my kindergarten class. Because of this, our mothers were also very close, and one of us rarely got away with something the other wasn't supposed to do. The show was well into its sixth season, and I had just started watching. Boy Meets World is a show that truly grows with its characters, and my by the time I was six, the characters were graduating high school and dabbling in the more adult stages of life. My best friend's mom saw a particular episode in which two of the main characters were debating whether or not to have sex, and because of this, she warned my mom not to let me watch the show. It was inappropriate for our young ears.

In a few years my mom had forgotten the warning and I began watching the re-runs on TV. There's something about this show, where the stand-alone episodes work as its own entity, while also creating an ongoing plot throughout the season that makes you want to watch them all in order (which is why I decided to finally watch them all the way through).

I really like that the show started with the main character, Cory, and his friends, Topanga and Shawn, as sixth graders. The entire tone of the show revolved around their youngness and naivete. Cory and Shawn both thought girls were icky, Cory couldn't understand why his brother wanted to date them instead of hanging out with him, and his problems were relatively simple sixth-grade problems.

However, as Cory became older, going from seventh to eighth, to ninth, his problems because more and more complicated. Girls were slowly added to the picture, the realization that one particular girl (Topanga) was someone he loved more than any fifteen-year-old ever should love someone, and the nerves that come with such a difficult time.

I'm really glad I decided to go back and watch the show. Right now I'm about halfway through their tenth-grade year, and I'm excited to see the characters as they reach the roadblocks I've encountered the past few years.

On the flip side, it's also strange to realize that I'm finally older than the characters I've grown up and embolized throughout my childhood.
