IRB Approval needed?

In reviewing the UFL IRB website, I ran across the following information about the need for IRB approval for class projects: http://irb.ufl.edu/irb02/students.html. So, am I correct in thinking that we only need IRB approval if we plan to publish our results?

Research Approval in SL

Found this on the SLRL list -

Linden Lab (organization that manages Second Life) does not require
permission to conduct research in SL. They rely on institutions to
respect the Linden Lab terms of service and to have internal ethics
