Broad City

Last night was the season three premiere of the Comedy Central show Broad City.
4 and 3 and 2 and 1 and

The show focuses on the lives of two best friends Abbi and Ilana, trying to make it work in NYC. Some might argue that the "two friends just trying to make it work in the city" is an overdone cliche for a show. (See Two Broke Girls, Girls, Garfunkel and Oates, etc.) However Broad City is far and above these other shows.  As mentioned earlier, the show Abbi and Ilana is their various madcap adventures throughout NYC. What makes the show to great is that it takes often mundane tasks and aspects of day to day life and heightens them to the extreme often resulting in very surreal situations.

For instance, take this episode where Abbi must retrieve a package she was supposed to get for her neighbor, however she misses the dropoff window and must go pick it up herself.
Many of the show's episodes follow this structure; Abbi and Ilana need to get something or somewhere and must resort to drastic measures to do so. As the link above shows, these tasks often spin wildly out of control. But even in these surreal adventures, there is a realness to the show. It's through these bizarre adventures that the mundaneness and annoyances of everyday life in NYC can be seen.

One personal aspect of the show that I love is how unabashedly queer it is. For instance, in another episode Ilana meets and hooks up with a girl. Instead of having her engaging in a same sex hookup be the punchline, the joke comes from the fact the the pair looks exactly alike. Instead of using its queerness in a masturbatory or self congratulatory manner, the queerness is just part of the show and it celebrates it without making a huge deal about it.
All in all Broad City is smart, witty, and well done show. Be sure to check it out.

Broad City

Broad City is a sitcom that originally began as a web series, but now airs on Comedy Central. It was created by Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, who are the series' leads as well. The series revolves around the random adventures the two twenty-something women experience while living in New York City. Ilana and Abbi are vastly different in degree of motivation, but are still the best of friends. Ilana is very unmotivated at her job and takes breaks that last multiple hours. Abbi's dream is to be a personal trainer at a fitness center, but for now she is only a janitor.

Ilana and Abbi have a very interesting and close relationship; they are instigators of one another's habits (i.e. skipping work, smoking weed, etc.). Honestly, the show would be nothing without either of those characters. They play off one another so much that only having one of them would kill the whole vibe of the show.
Ilana and Lincoln's relationship also has an funny dynamic because he cares about her so much while she is just sort of boppin' around doing her own thing. They are very cute together but Ilana can't seem to see how perfect he is for her. Meanwhile, Abbi has a huge crush on her hot neighbor Jeremy, a hunky-yet-suave guy with a really cool beard. It seems like something is about to happen between the two of them but he ends up asking for a random favor. Abbi always ends up looking like a crazy person because of her friends/roommate's boyfriend acting like complete idiots in front of him. (I'm rooting for them hardcore).

Editing is a very important element of this show. There are a lot of quick cuts and zooms which make the show seem more real because we're seeing every reaction. Sound is also an important element; they use a lot of dramatic music to heighten humorous situations and it enhances the jokes a lot. The camerawork is kind of shaky overall, going with that "real life" feeling overall; I hear that in the second season they get a significantly better camera so the quality will definitely get better.

Broad City is quirky, inappropriate, and has very fast-paced humor. There are a lot of "what is going on" moments because many story arcs are kind of fantasy. For example, if Ilana and Abbi are stoned usually there will be a sequence where something ridiculous and unrealistic occurs. I highly recommend the show to anyone who likes Comedy Central shows.

THE GIRLS ARE BACK AT IT AGAIN ____BRINGING YOU BROAD CITY

Board City is back! Created by Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, and produced by Amy Poehler, broad city is a comedy between two best friends steering their way through the New York City life.
Abbi and IIana are two eccentric, crazy girls. They next stray away from situations that my lead them to trouble in the streets of NYC. They are two bad ass b****es! Not matter the trouble they always find a way out.

This is an amazing show to get in tact with.  Abbi and Ilana are the girls you want to hang with.  They're what us city gals call our kind of people.  They remind us of horrors and joys the city life provides us with.

What do Abbi and Ilana do a daily basis?

  • Talk about a lot of sex
  • Wear flea market vintage clothing along with some American Appeal and H&M
  • SMOKE A LOT OF WEED

This show portrays two strong Feminist Women ---- in which they refer to each other as "dude". They are the true representation of women in their 20's with their minimum wage jobs, mediocre roommates, but enjoy their friendship.

Broad City is the true representation of the imperfect female. Broad City recognizes that no one is perfect. The ideal of perfect women on TV is getting old its time we live in the real and embrace our inner imperfections and never be ashamed of who we are.
