Daily Show pokes fun at SL/Congress use of SL

Additionally, here is an article about it.

This reminds me of the line that there is no such thing as bad publicity - Right!

However, it does show that virtual worlds are to a certain extent going mainstream, when they are part of comedy, law makers hearings, network TV shows, and regularly happening news media stories.

I found an insightful comment on kotaku.com about the SL congress event.

Legistators jobs are to create laws. The worst thing legislators can (and do) do is make laws about things they don't understand. Remember the famous soundbyte about a series of tubes?

I just attended a virtual worlds conference where I sat mostly in the virtual law sessions. The handful of lawyers I met last week are the forefront of the field. There's more questions than answers, and in the field of law that means everyone plays along until there's either a case precedent or a law that makes something clear.

The entire purpose of this session was for Congress to learn a little about virtual worlds so as to understand it better and not legislate the crap out of things from a position of sheer ignorance.

I think it is a good thing to force our politicians to experience and understand new technologies and trends. Otherwise they are bound to make stupid uninformed decisions on important subjects.
