This is a very ambitious project at the same time that it is extremely interesting as a concept because in fact what you are looking for is the "killer app" in the edu-tainment (I detest that word!) or "serious game" world.
One thing that intrigues me is that the project idea seem very developed. Can you explain how the idea came about inside the group? It gives the appearance of and idea that was previously drafted since it is so detailed, is that the case?
I would also like to know the composition of your group. Who does what, what is the participation of each individual manifested in this project and what are the individual responsibilities?
You mention that you don't have a name for the project yet. Where did "sline" come from? that is a PERFECT name. SL In Education? c'mon guys, register the name and go for it. (I know it rhymes with "slime" but that will only come to pass if the project sucks!:-)
This project requires a substantial production effort as you might be realizing by now. Try to identify the absolute essentials very early so that you can make sure at least those elements get done.
Who are you going to use as "students? what age groups? local, international, is language an important element? can you get by without it since you are trying to break some ground and preconceptions as to how kids learn? Is it kids, teens, adults? remember SL has very strict guidelines for this. FOr example no children or teens are allowed on the island no matter what. Have you thought about that?
I basically see two participants active in your wiki, Keith and Narasi, what is up?
I have a suggestion. Since you are still in the brainstorm stage, even though you have identified the basic project, you should let ideas be expressed in your wiki without putting them down. One of the rules of brainstorming is that everything goes. You do not know how a simple suggestion that seemed silly at the time becomes essential later on. I you had only kept it and not kill it!
Since you have a Wiki, it would be nice if you give everyone an "invite" so they can participate the same way they can with the blog as well as a password for the moodle.
Oh, I forgot to mention, in relation to the "learning environment" I would take a very close look at a game that has hardly been equaled or surpassed in originality and all the qualities that you are looking for, and that is Myst.
I have posted some updates that would address parts of your questions. The big hiccup we may have is the integration part with SL we may have to do this as a stand alone project is the integration does not flow through. As for students we were thinking of using our class mates for the experimentation we will be discussing this with our group.
